Star Wars nerds and kids who are growing up.

One of my favorite things about my town is Halloween.  Cleveland, TN knows how to do Halloween.  Downtown they go all out.  Lots of decorations and swarms of kids.  I look forward to it every year.  This year, it looked as though we might get rained out.  The sky was dark and ominous with big gust of wind and storms in the forecast.  Fortunately, the rain held off.  We got to walk from our house, accompanied by friends, to trick our treat in our neighborhood.  I love the feeling of community that comes with Halloween. We always run into countless friends while we are out.  Halloween is just magical.  The vivid leaves, the laughing kids and the small town charm is the perfect setting for tons of fun and glutenous candy consumption.

As for our outfits, this year we had a theme.  Henry wanted us all to be Star Wars characters.  Everyone was on board, expect Alex because he is two and ferociously stubborn. More on Alex in a moment.  As for our outfits, I sewed them all myself.  My sister found this great tutorial for the robes.  Super easy and quick.  I knocked out three in around an hour (and I am not a skilled or fast seamstress).  My sister found the felt on Jo Ann's website on sale and it was super cheap, like $1.50 a yard.   As for my outfit, I just kind of winged it.  I made a basic gown based off the boys robes from an $8 clearance sheet set I got at target.  I made a hood like the one in this tutorial.  The hair, well it is all mine!?  I got lots of comments on it.  The best was from an older lady who didn't believe it was my hair.  I tried to explain to her my trick, sock buns.  This resulted in intense confusions from her.  She kept saying "you put socks in your hair!"  I then made another mistake and told her to look it up on YouTube.  You would have thought I was speaking another language.    The sweetest comments came from the kids.  Lots of little girls came up to me.  I love dressing up, never too old right?

And Alex, well he wanted to be Thomas so bad.  But, He refused to wear a costume.  I mean refused.  So we came up with this outfit.  He loved it.  It was a little funny taking him up to houses because people gave us the weirdest look. I was crazy dressed up and my kid wasn't in a costume.  I kept telling people, he was supposed to be Jedi.  I'm not sure they believed me.

This year the boys really got into trick or treating.  In fact Henry told me I could just stay on the sidewalk.  He informed me that he and his friends could go on their own. I couldn't decided if I was thrilled that he was over coming his shyness or heart broken that he didn't need me.  Alex, following in his brother's example went by himself to most the doors.  Something Henry would have never done at two.  Then again, Alex has such a different temperament.  He didn't care about the crowds, in fact he kept wandering off on his own.

Speaking of being brave, for the first time ever Henry got his picture with an M&M.  If you aren't from my town, I realize having a M&M roaming around on Halloween is odd.  But, we have a large M&M Mars plant right in town (which sometimes makes the town smell like chocolate).   One of our close friends (hi Matt) works there.  My kids have grown up with M&Ms, Henry has always been terrified of them.  Until this year.  He willingly went up to him and got his picture taken.  I couldn't believe it.  In the past he would ran away crying.

This is my favorite photo of the night!  Henry actually went up to the really scary house, with daddy, to get candy.  He even let us snap his picture with chainsaw guy.  Look at this face, he was so unsure.

Not to worry, little brother was shooting the zombies and chainsaw guys with my blaster.  Because that is how he rolls.

Basically, our Halloween was fantastic.  We are blessed with great friends and a wonderful little town.

PS.  Here are our halloween post from years past.  I just realized that I don't have any photos from Henry's first halloween!?  Not sure how that happened but it is a problem that must be fixed! :)
