I spent an amazing week in New York City, I chaperoned an art department trip with the college I work at. The entire week was dedicated to art. We went to all the museums, visited galleries, went to spring break art show and saw all kinds of innovated and strange art installations. It was magical.
One of the best aspects of the trip was all the drawing that happened. There were a couple of times that we all sat down as a group and sketched. Not to mention all the subway drawing. On a whim I bought a little red note book from the MoMA gift shop. It was the best little sketch book that fit perfectly in the outside pocket of my purse. It had this dreamy smooth texture to the pages. I knew I needed more. And then, I discover the MUJI store. Swoon. I found the company online but the shipping was kind of high ($6 for a $1.75 notebook). At an art store at SoHo I asked if they carried the books and he told me no but they had an entire store around the corner. I love Japanese design and I wanted to buy everything. EVERYTHING. In the end I grabbed a few pens and my beloved new books.
Here is a flip through of my little Muji scribblers that filled up, mostly on the subway, These are all really quick sketches, under 10min. All done directly in ink. Some I love, Some I hate. But all of them have been great practice.
I also did some legit sketching around the city. Here are the pages I did plus a few photos.
I love the energy of the city. I had been a couple of times but this was the most intensive trip I had ever taken. I can't wait to venture back into the city one day.
